Hi Jaime,
ReplyDeleteI love Punakaiki - it's such a beautiful, rugged place, isn't it? Are you still there? Are you visiting for the holidays with your family? Love the selfie :)
Wow, you have done some thorough research for this blog post. I totally agree with your analysis of overfishing. Initially, you just think that the loss of one species of fish would not be that terrible, but when you start to see how things fit together in the ecosystem, it could be catastrophic as you say. Once we lose an animal or plant, it's lost forever, and we don't necessarily have the knowledge at this stage to understand the effect.
I found it interesting to read that the Ellesmere River is so polluted and there has been a lot of effort to clean it up, but it is still very bad. It's a shame that the clean up efforts have not been more effective. Do you think this is because much of the clean up of polluted rivers is left up to local residents and volunteers? What is the council or the government doing about it?
I hope you're having a lovely holiday and getting some good weather. It has just turned very windy at Lake Tekapo where I am at the moment!

Ata mΔrie Jaime,
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have been enjoying your summer holidays. It's great to see that you've still been blogging over the festive season.
You've come up with some really thoughtful fundraising ideas. I like how each of your ideas targets a different demographic (group) so that everybody can be involved. The Great Barrier Reef would be an incredible place to snorkel - imagine all the animals you'd see! Have you been snorkelling before? The last time I went was in Fiji. The reef wasn't nearly as big as Great Barrier but there were lots of beautiful, colourful fish.
Well done on completing another fantastic, well presented, post Jaime. Keep up the great blogging! :)
