In social studies we have been studying technology and change, and we learned how they used stone tools to advance up the food chain.

However we also learned about the art they made using their hands, fingers, and sometimes sticks. They didn't have the kinds of paint and mediums we have today, so instead they made dull colours using dyes and dirt from the Earth itself. To learn more about this topic hands-on we got to do cave art-inspired painting on the wall. 
We used similar colours that early humans also used: a colour palette mainly consisting of black, earthy red, orange, yellow. Note that we used paints instead of actual dirt and dyes, although we didn't have brushes and used our hands, fingers, and sticks to make our paintings. 

Here is my painting. It is inspired by the flaming Elmo meme, which is personally one of my favourite memes. I chose this because I think I could really replicate and portray the emotion that this meme represents through the use of red, orange and yellow. I must admit I did cheat and use black and white for the eyes but I'm really proud of my creation.

Plot in the Hunger Games (interactive)

Here is the link to my independent film study work, based on the plot in the Hunger Games. I must admit plot isn't my strong point especially in film but I'm proud of my work.

I am learning to describe the plot of a film as well as explain how it effected the film and the viewers. 

A comprehensive review of trigonometry

1. What are some of the mathematical concepts we have looked at or worked on in class?
I opted to study trigonometry in maths, so a small group of us have looked at Pythagoras theorem and the concept of SAH, CAH, and TOA in trig. I didn't have any experience with any of these concepts when I first started but I've definitely improved a lot. I'm really enjoyed trigonometry so far as it kind of (emphasis on kind of) relates to algebra which is one concept of mathematics that I really, really like and am relatively good at. 

What questions do you still have about trig? 
Honestly the question I want answered is how can I get better. I really enjoy some aspects of maths and want to continue into vocational or enterprise maths in NCEA next year, plus trig is pretty useful to know if I want to be successful in this subject. I'm confident in everything we've learned so far through the worksheets we've been given as well as the independent study time we're given. 

3. Describe a mistake or misconception you or a classmate had in class. What did you learn from this mistake?
One mistake I made was with the calculator, I had no idea how to make the cos/sin/tan with the little exponent come up (turns out it's shift + cos,sin,or tan) but I asked for help and learned from it. Any other mistakes I made, I googled and got some pretty good answers but asking Mr Werder for help gave me a lot more specific help for a certain equation.

4. What new vocab words were introduced?
Sin, cos, tan were always words I saw on my calculator but I never knew the meaning of, now I know what they mean and can use them in my work confidently. Pythagoras theorem was new to me too, as for trig I recognised the word but didn't know what work it covered. So, I've learned a lot of new words so far.

Are teenagers addicted to their phones? (social studies)






MY STATISTICS

Using the screen time feature on my iPhone I was able to find out how much time I spend on my phone everyday.
My weekly average of hours per day in the last 7 days was 5h 48m, down 13% from last week. Out of these hours, 17 h 32m were spent on social media, 8h 2m on games, and 3h 39m on entertainment such as Netflix and Youtube. This all rounds up to a weekly total of 40h and 41m. 


Today as of 11:37am, I have been on my phone for 3h 29m, almost 2h 31m above average. That consists of nearly 2 hours of social media, 29 minutes of games, and 28 minutes of entertainment. My most used app is Snapchat which is common in teenagers, following that is Minecraft and Instagram. 


PARAGRAPH QUESTION: Are teenagers addicted to their phones? 

Someone once said to me along the lines of this: 'when you are addicted, partaking in that certain activity doesn't make it a good day, it makes it a normal day.' When we are talking in the sense of social media or questioning the statistics of phone addiction, I do believe that a majority of teenagers are addicted to their phones, and most of us see it like this, including the addicts themselves. 
For example, according to the 2016 Common Sense Media report, approximately half of teenagers surveyed feel they are addicted in some way to their phone or social media. A 2018 Pew Research report indicated that 45 percent of teenagers use the internet "almost constantly". Furthermore, 50 percent of girls are near-constant internet users, compared to the male statistic of 39 percent. 95 percent of teens surveyed has access to a smartphone of some kind. Studies show that this may be a psychological problem for teenagers. Not only does frequent cell phone use at night alter the user's sleeping patterns, but researchers have concluded there are similarities and differences between diagnostic symptoms of drug addictions and behavioral addictions (such as cell phone addiction). It is evident that the physical signs of drug addiction are not present in behavioral addiction through the symptoms of withdrawal: drug addicts go through physical withdrawal as well as a psychological withdrawal, whereas behavioral addicts go through the psychological withdrawal predominantly. From a neurological view, the effects of pharmaceutical addiction on the brain's chemical levels (such as dopamine, the "happy" chemical) and the effects of behavioral addiction are extremely similar. When behavioral addicts and drug addicts go through withdrawal, for example, the effect it has on the brain is quite similar. From this information I can conclude that yes, most teenagers are addicted to their smartphones, but furthermore, the effects of behavioral addiction is worse than we think. A question we should ask ourselves is this: when you use your cellphone, does it make it a good day, or a normal day?

The Hunger Games | Essay preparation

In 'The Hunger Games', colour effectively portrays the theme of rich vs. poor as a juxtaposition is drawn between the Capitol and District 12 to compare the two settings. 


Within the Capitol, costume is used effectively to portray the theme of rich versus poor. This explores the juxtaposition in costume between District 12 and the Capitol.

I painted 'Starry Night' on a boomerang (oops)

Carrying on from our study on migration, we had to paint an Australian aboriginal boomerang. We were supposed to paint it so it told a story, using common Aboriginal methods of painting and abstracting along with using the colour scheme they used: red, yellow, black. 

My boomerang is a reproduction of the infamous painting 'Starry Night' by Dutch post-impressionist (impressionism is a form of art, usually recognised by the use of the paint strokes) Vincent Van Gogh. This is my favourite painting, it is supposed to represent the view from an asylum in the stunning Southern France.

This isn't really an aboriginal painting, I know, but I had fun doing it and I'm pretty proud of how it came out. I've painted on a lot of mediums but I have to admit I've never painted on a boomerang before. I would try and abstract it through the use of dots, if I got the opportunity to do this again - which I hope I do get, because this was really fun to do. If only we got to paint in every other class *hint hint* 

As for the other side of my boomerang, I only had one quarter of the period to complete it, so I quickly painted some simple clouds on a sky. It's not my best work but it looks fine.

SCIENCE: Dry cell vs wet cell batteries

Did you know there are two kinds of batteries, and they are both powered in very different ways? These different kinds of batteries are called wet cell batteries and dry cell batteries. The main difference between these batteries is that dry cell batteries get their power from an electrolyte paste, whereas wet cell batteries get their power from a liquid electrolyte.

What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are substances that have the ability to conduct and generate energy and power, so they're used in batteries. They're also found in the human bodies, animal bodies, and atoms.

Although both really good at their job, wet and dry cell batteries are used for different things. Wet cell batteries obviously contain liquid, so they usually stick to powering things that remain upright such as buses, airplanes, cars, motorcycles, and those sorts of things.
Whereas dry cell batteries are a bit more versatile and can be flipped and moved around easily. That's why we find dry cell batteries in things such as mobile phones. Furthermore, dry cell batteries can last for around 5 years, unlike wet cell batteries which don't exceed a life of over around 2 years.
