WHARE TAPA WHA | HAUORA
I thought I would never have to post about Hauora ever again on this blog, but here we are.
Whare Tapa Wha is about the four dimensions in Hauora - Taha Hinengaro (mental wellbeing), Taha Tinana (physical wellbeing), Taha Wairua (spiritual wellbeing), and Taha Whanau (social wellbeing). These four terms originated from Maori philosophy.
This is useful to understand because if you are able to learn to balance all four of these dimensions, they come together to create a balanced, peaceful lifestyle for you and your family.
One way you could imagine these dimensions as is like a house with four walls. You need these four dimensions in order to keep the house standing otherwise everything falls down. This is why today our task was to build a house using five pieces of paper representing the four dimensions of Whare Tapa Wha. I worked with Ava, Tanaya, and Stacey, and in the end we were able to make our own house.
I think I participated well in the challenge. I contributed by doing some of the construction of the house and writing a definition of one of the dimensions on a wall. The others took part in building and writing too so we contributed evenly.
It was challenging when we were building the house because we didn't figure out how to staple certain places to actually get it to stick. Plus the tape was pretty annoying and it got stuck in weird places. I coped with the challenge by staying calm and having others in my team help me hold it still.
I believe I worked well with others because we were able to get the assigned task done without any fuss and I'm proud of how it turned out.

CAMERA TECHNIQUES 🎥
What am I learning?
I am learning the different kinds of camera techniques used in film, what kind of scenes they are used for, and the importance of them.
How does this work show my learning?
By creating this I can show that I know the definitions of these camera techniques, why they are important, and what kind of scenes they are used in.
What am I wondering?
What are the most common camera angles/shots/movements in film?

PROBLEM SOLVING IN BUSINESS
Today in health we have been working towards the completion of some Google slides as we learn about problem solving in businesses.
I learned... different techniques on how to problem solve in business with others (joint problem solving.
When discussing thought challenges what did you learn about yourself?
When I think, I believe I often react negatively. I learned ways to cope with this - using a question such as 'What is a positive thought I can have?' as a thought challenge to try and think more positively.
During the Business and Enterprise Kete I will be able to face challenges by... using small steps to overcome problems I have with other people (joint problem solving).
Noticing whether my thoughts are red or green and challenging them with a yellow question thought.
When 2 or more of my group members are challenged during the Business and Enterprise Kete we can using the coping steps by...
1. Stating what you both want.
2. Explaining negative consequences for both of them.
3. Negotiating for a win-win situation for both of you.

VISUAL+SOUND TECHNIQUES 🎥
What am I learning?
I am learning visual and sound techniques used widely in film; why they are important, how they are used and what the definitions of these words mean.
How does this show my learning?
By creating a crossword puzzle I am showing that I know the definition to key words related to visual and sound techniques and show that I am able to teach other people.
What am I wondering as a result of my learning?
I am wondering what are some other things that are also important in visual and sound techniques; and also what are the most important to create a great film.

HHS CARR LICENSES ✨
This term we have been introduced to a new system of learning; Carr Licenses.
Carr Licenses are an adaption of a system I remember using in Year Seven, the Privileges Ladder, where students are ranked by tier. The higher the tier, the more privileges you are granted.
What are the tiers?
There are four tiers in the new Carr license system, expert, full, restricted, and learners. The top tier is expert (green coloured), the second is full (yellow), the next is restricted and the final is learners.
What is my rank?
I was happily surprised with my rank being full, which is the highest tier available to students at the moment.
What do I do to get my full license?
Having my full license means I make good decisions about my learning, I only use my phone with permission, I stay on task, working with the teacher helps me focus, I have my equipment ready, I catch up on work when I miss class, I accept the consequences of my actions, I have a way of organising my work and resources, and I get get back on task if I get distracted.
What are the privileges?
Being on my full license comes with a range of privileges, including working anywhere with my teacher's permission, I may use the kitchen area to fill up my water bottle, and I have increased control over my conditions of work, to name a few. But it also comes with some restrictions. I'm not allowed to eat in class yet, I still need teacher's permission to do somethings.
What can I do next to reach my expert license?
I'm going to work on making changes to my work based on feedback, including others, and seeking more information when I am interested in something. These are all skills of an expert license. I think I'm really close to getting my expert license but I still need to work hard to maintain my current status as having a full license.
What CARR license are you on? Leave your feedback in the comments!

ASSERTIVENESS IN BUSINESS
Since I've returned to Health at school I have been independently working towards the completion of a task on assertiveness, and how it is important in business, along with learning how to reduce conflict.
I learnt what 'assertive' really means (getting your point across, all while considering the opinion and thoughts of the other person), more on how to reduce conflict in business, and why assertiveness and reducing conflict is important in business
Learning this made me a bit more aware of how I show assertiveness, aggressive, and passiveness. When I am fighting with my parents I am typically aggressive rather than assertive or passive. I can improve these skills by taking time to recognise that other people have opinions and that I need to respect them no matter what they are.
However I can be passive and assertive too - when I am negotiating with my sister on who can get the front seat of the car I ensure that we both get a chance to ride in the front seat. This shows assertiveness. I am also passive throughout the day as I act in a non-hostile manner most, if not all of the time.
During the Business and Enterprise Kete I will be able to reduce conflict by taking a few deep breaths to calm down, go for a walk, rinsing off my face with a splash of cold water, and having peaceful conversations that provide a chance for both people to win (being assertive). For example if me and my group buddy gets in an argument over what colour icing we want, we could settle on both icing colours being used instead of one.

CHRISTCHURCH VOICES FESTIVAL 🎵
Last night a group of about 30 of the Voices With Soul members travelled to the Christchurch YMCA in the city to attend the 2018 Voices Festival. We have been working hard all term towards performing 'Come Alive' from the Greatest Showman and 'Finale B' from Rent.
We were all super excited to go to some workshops on the day and finally be able to perform in front of an audience that wasn't our school.
The Voices Festival wasn't a competition, although they did hand out some awards. We got an award for 'Best Goosebumps', a 'Hell Yeah' award, and some other award I can't remember (oops) but we did get the most awards out of all of the schools.
Here are some photos we took at the Arts Centre beforehand!

READER'S CUP 2018 📖
Last week, Nicole, Dylan, Molly, Chloe and I were finally able to attend the Reader's Cup 2018 at the Riccarton Public Library.
We had been reading all the books for the past two terms so we were super excited to be able to go.
My favourite book from the competition had to be One by Sarah Crossan. It had a unique writing style that I enjoyed reading - it was like a book of poetry!
I had a least favourite book (or two) of course. It was a challenge having to read all these fantasy books that I didn't really enjoy but I ended up reading them all.
So we arrived at the library and were seated in a conference room with about eight other schools - Middleton Grange, Riccarton High, Villa Maria etc, and we got started right away.
It became very clear that the questions were more based on specific facts about the book rather than themes and events. We got a lot of questions wrong because of this, but we have something to work on for next time if we do it.
In the end we tied last place with Villa Maria. We didn't have any idea of what this competition would be like which didn't improve our scores anyway.
Overall we did have a really fun time anyway, it's definitely something I would like to do next year.

PROTEIN EXPERIMENT ⚛️
AIM: To test if a sample of food contains protein or not.
EQUIPMENT: Test tube, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), copper sulfate (CuSO4), food sample (eggs, milk).
METHOD:
1. Place about 2mL of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate
3. Shake the test tube GENTLY from side to side, as opposed to up and down.
RESULTS:
If the solution remains blue, then no protein is present. If the solution shifts to a purple colour then protein is present in the sample.
CONCLUSION:
After shaking for about 2-3 minutes each time, for some unknown reason both our solutions remained blue instead of shifting to purple; this may have possibly been due to an incorrect ratio of NaOH to CuS04 or not enough of the food sample in the test tube.
1. Body builders try to eat a diet high in protein. Why do they do this?
To increase muscle mass and repair damaged tissue.
2. Name three types of food a body-builder should eat in order to consume a lot of protein.
a) Dairy
b) Red meat/poultry
c) Seafood
3. Explain why a test tube is shaken gently from side to side rather than up and down when completing an investigation like this one.
Because this ensures the solution is not accidentally spilled out of the test tube which could happen if it was shaken vigorously up and down.

AM I AN INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT? 🤔
Today I was given the task to participate in a quiz to learn whether I am more of an extrovert or introvert. This is something I've debated with friends for ages because I always felt like I was an introvert that could be extroverted at some times.
The questions asked about social events, friendships, and even your favourite kind of TV show and colour. Throughout the quiz I kind of guessed that I would be more of an introvert judging by the way I was answering the questions.
Here are my results:
I was okay with my results, and it was fun getting to know a little more about me. The link to the quiz is here so if you want to try it for yourself you can!

RESILIENCE IN BUSINESS
LO > Define resilience and demonstrate understanding + resilience in business blog.
For the past two lessons in Health we have been working towards defining and demonstrating our understanding of resilience. I think this was an easy task to do but I still learned a few things.
I learnt...
- More about why resilience is essential in situations such as business: it is important because businesses are susceptible to change and if you have the right understanding of how to adapt quickly, it really puts you in the right mindset to continue being successful.
- Developed my understanding of resilience and examples of resilience. Resilience means to have the ability to consistently keep doing your best no matter how difficult a task may be; it also means to have the ability to bounce back and recover quickly from a difficult situation that you struggled with to continue doing your best.
- Started to learn more about some interpersonal skills (resilience) we need to be successful in our business and enterprise topic.
My favourite saying connected to resilience is..
"Bounce back." This is because it reminds me that no matter how hard times get, you can always bounce back and get back on track. This phrase really motivates me cause I can relate to it.
It was difficult to understand information about...
We were showed a video which explained how to be more resilient through some little mouse people trying to find new cheese in a maze. I felt as if I had to read between the lines at some parts to really understand what was going on, but at the end I was confident with what the video had showed me and I was able to try and use it in real life.
It taught me...
Some examples on how to be more resilient in everyday situations, including 'adapt to change quickly,' and 'get ready for change'.
How did you relate to the video Who Moved my Cheese?
I related to it because all humans, including myself, go through tough times and it's easy to avoid finding a solution when things change rather than adapting to it and being resilient.
During the Business and Enterprise Kete I will be able to...
Adapt quickly to change when it happens, make the right decisions on what to do when things change, and overall be more resilient in my business operation, while at the same time be able to enjoy change and monitor it appropriately.
My favourite photo shared with us about resilience. |
