🎶 MUSIC MEGA-BLOG: Focused Listening 🎶

1st song: Adele, Hello

1. What instruments can you hear?
Piano, vocals, drums, backing vocals, bass (only very subtle). There was also a keyboard I didn't originally pick up.

2. How would you describe the singer's voice?
Adele's voice is slow, raw, powerful, and strong. She can sing high notes powerfully, and low notes. She has an excellent vibrato and natural singing ability: she is able to sing without straining her voice. There are some high notes that Adele hits effortlessly. Really brilliant runs, overall an excellent voice, I'm only slightly jealous.

3. What kind of feel does this song have?
Hello by Adele has a sort of sad yet soulful feel to it, I feel as if though you could cry to this very easily and have a good emotional release. It's a powerful, bold song that's a great breakup anthem. Slow, regretful, and painful, yet empowering.

2nd song: Adele, Hello (reggae cover)

1. What instruments can you hear?
A drum/percussion of some sort: bongos, drums, vocals, backing vocals, a string instruments I can't identify.

2. How would you describe the singer's voice?
The singer's voices was very plain in my opinion, both singers (male and female) were able to hit the notes well, including some high ones, but it wasn't particularly powerful or emotional. Both are talented singers. The male vocalist has a subtle rasp to his voice which I liked, it brought some depth to the song.

3. What kind of feel does this song have?
This song is very chill and more upbeat in comparison to Adele's original version of Hello. It had a really nice Island feel like what I really loved. Both songs are very different but I liked both feels, I feel as if though you could feel two very different emotions while listening to both songs.

Performance Portfolio: Music 🎤✨

Task 1: Who inspires you?
Choose two of your biggest inspirations and tell us why they inspire you! Include links to music.

My inspiration: Brian Head Welch
Brian Head Welch was a former member of the American heavy metal band, Korn. Growing up in the 80's-90's United States, Welch became addicted to many drugs such as meth, marijuana, and crack cocaine. Suffering an abusive relationship, and the stress of having a child, made life dire for Welch. However, Welch had friends who had found Jesus Christ in bad times, and, following in their footsteps, Welch quit drugs, quit Korn, and is now living as a devoted Christian. All while managing a solo career under the stagename 'Head.' I first discovered Welch's music after reading his autobiography last year. Since then I've really liked his music, which is typically very heavy and not for everyone but I personally really like it. Give him a listen! ↓
I'm inspired by Brian Head Welch because he was able to pull himself out of a bad time in his life and is now thriving as a successfully-accomplished Christian with a beautiful, successful daughter. It proves that everyone has the ability to change their life for the better and I can do the same.

What would you like your focus instrument next term to be?
Personally I want to work on improving my singing because that's an instrument too!
Singing actually originated so long ago, it was before the birth of Christ. Singing was an important part of Christian worship, and still is. It was around 4 B.C that 'Seneca' wrote about being interrupted late at night by Christians practising vocal exercises. Christians often sung at church or group prayers.
The first song recorded, however, was recorded by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville. He was a Frenchman who also was credited for the creation of the phonautograph, the earliest-known device that recorded sound.

Wow, that's terrifying to listen to. Remember, music was very different back in the time period this was recorded in - 1860.

Group performance

1. What is left to rehearse in your performance?
Honestly I think the choreography is as good as it's going to get, but the singing is the part we need to work on a little bit more. We chose a really hard song in terms of vocals (it gets quite high at some parts and low at others) so it's not going to be perfect of course but we're still working hard to do well which I know we will!
2. What do you need to do during your holiday practice?
Working on singing our own parts separately would be really beneficial, as well as just going over choreography to make sure it's perfect and that we don't forget it. I figure we might meet up during the holidays and work on it. We even have a group chat dedicated to this assessment... we're... very hard-working.
3. Is there anything you are worried about?
The singing is probably the thing that I'm most worried about, it seems like we can't find a good volume asides from soft little head voices to screaming hyenas. Another thing I'm worried about is nerves but the only thing I can do is fake it 'til I make it!
4. How are you feeling about performing in class?
I don't think anyone likes performing in class, so I'm not really excited about it, but I'm just hoping that we do well so we can get the high excellence we're aiming for.
5. What are you doing to prepare for this?
We've booked the auditorium on Friday lunches, we've made a group chat and we've found costumes/finding costumes in our own time. I still need to find a skirt if possible and organise what heels I'm going to wear, as well as for Nadia. Sam seems to have everything sorted. Good job Sam.

PERFORMING ARTS MEGA BLOG (updated weekly)

1. Who are you performing with?
I am performing with my friends Nadia and Samantha. Check out their school blogs at: http://hhsnadiao.blogspot.com and hhssamanthar.blogspot.com.

2. Which type of performing art are you performing?

We decided on performing 'musical theatre'. On the assessment task sheet musical theatre must include dialogue and a song.

3. What song/theme are you performing and why?

After some planning and some singing, we decided on Candy Store from the musical Heathers. Visit the original video that we have been inspired by below! We picked this because it's personally one of Nadia and Sam's favourite musicals movies and after listening to it, I loved the soundtrack so much too.

4. What are we starting with first?
I am of course going to listen to and learn the lyrics  before we begin practising. I'm actually the only one in the trio that doesn't know all of the lyrics because I hadn't seen it before this... lucky me.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORMING ARTS! 💃

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is a genre of theatrical performance combining spoken dialogue, song, dance, and acting, in which singing is the essential part.

My favourite musical I don't care what anyone thinks ↓

Mime
The theatrical technique of suggesting action, character, or emotion without words, using only gesture, expression, and movement.

Silent Movies

<1920's

Silent movies have no speaking, but they do have a soundtrack over top. The actors communicate by facial expressions and physical gestures. Fun fact: actors often painted their eyebrows thin and dark so it was easier to show how their eyebrows moved in an effort to accentuate their facial expressions. They require some skills and have to put a lot of effort into their performances. Charlie Chaplin was probably the most famous silent movie actor.

Silent movies also required a lot of specific costumes as the actors weren't able to communicate what they were. Because of this, setting was also important too.

Wicked, The Musical, Synopsis
When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire's acclaimed 1995 novel, 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West', re-imagines the Land of Oz, creating a parallel universe to the familiar story written by L. Frank Baum and first published as 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' in 1900.

WICKED tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two young women who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Hamilton, The Musical, Synopsis
Lin-Manuel Miranda's Pulitzer prize-winning transformation of Ron Chernow's biography, Hamilton, into a hip-hop musical is taking the world by storm. At the center of this groundbreaking multi-award-winning new musical is the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton, whose ambition drove him from the position of Caribbean outsider and bastard child to American war hero and George Washington's right-hand man. In the process, Alexander Hamilton powerfully shaped America as we have come to know it -- and gave us all a template for what it means to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and realize the American Dream. This exploration of Hamilton's political mastermind is being called "the most exciting and significant musical of the decade." David Brooks of the New York Times declared seeing Hamilton to be "one of the most exhilarating experiences I've had in the theatre." With heart, humor, and respect, Lin-Manuel Miranda's new musical breathes vibrant, colorful life into this story of America's founding fathers.

Dear Evan Hansen, the musical, synopsis
Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of a young man with social anxiety disorder who so yearns to make a connection with his peers that he fabricates a relationship with a deceased student to become closer to the boy’s family. When a classmate commits suicide, shy Evan Hansen finds himself at the center of the tragedy and turmoil. In a misguided attempt to comfort the boy’s grieving family, Evan pretends that he was actually good friends with their son. He invents a fabricated email account to “prove” their friendship, and when a fake suicide note makes its way online, Evan finds himself the unintended face of a viral video about loneliness and friendship. As his social currency skyrockets, Evan is drawn deeper and deeper into the lie. His relationship with his actual mother wanes in comparison to that of his “shiny new family.” He finally lands the girl of his dreams, and most importantly--he’s no longer invisible. Eventually, Evan is forced to make a decision: Will he give himself over to the fantasy he’s created, or will he bite the bullet and risk losing everything he’s ever wanted? With a fast-paced new score from fresh young songwriting duo Pasek and Paul, (not to mention a few Tony awards), Dear Evan Hansen has become an instant hit among theatergoers everywhere.

DANCE IN PERFORMING ARTS💃

Parris Goebel
Research task. 15.02.18.

1.Who is Parris Goebel?
Parris Goebel is a 27-year old New Zealand choreography, best known for her role in the 3x award-winning dance crew, The Royal Family.

2. Where did she grow up?
Parris was born in Manurewa, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand to parents Brett and LeAnn Goebel. Something I found interesting is that her mother LeAnn, is of Scottish, Samoan, and Chinese descent.
Interested in dance from a young age, Parris soon began dance lessons at the age of 10 before going on to form the ReQuest dance group five years later.

3. How/when did she study dance?

Parris studied at Auckland Girls Grammar School, before dropping out at the age of 15 to focus on dance; and incredibly, she predominantly taught herself. In an interview with the NZ Herald, Parris explained, quote, "I tried finding the right studio but didn't feel at home anywhere. I was always on my own journey." I find this to be very inspiring, it simply proves that you don't have to go to the best or fanciest mentor in order to be successful.

And how successful Parris became....
At the age of 27, she owns her own dance company - The Palace Dance Studio in Auckland - is married, won gold at the World Hip Hop Championships with her ReQuest dance group, has choreographed for musicians such as Justin Bieber (including the hit single Sorry, which currently stands at the 3rd most viewed YouTube video of all time) and published her own book titled Young Queen. It's truly remarkable that we have such an inspiring, iconic queen named Parris Goebel representing New Zealand at dance, choreography, directing, acting, and singing. You go girl! 💖
