BULLYING IN NEW ZEALAND 🇳🇿

Bullying can be recognised in a number of ways:
It is when one or more people purposely target another person either online or in real life. They might call them names and make fun of them, or more non-verbally, attack and punch them. Online bullying is called cyber-bullying, and is recognised by mean messages, sharing degrading photos of someone else, etc.

How can you determine whether is it just bullying or teasing?
1. It happens more than once.
2. There is an unbalance of power (2 against 1 etc.)
3. It is always on purpose.

This is useful to understand because...
Bullying can happen anywhere to anyone - in the workplace, in public, particularly in schools etc. Even if it doesn't happen to you, it useful to recognise bullying in order to put a stop to it and help out someone else who is being bullied. In New Zealand bullying is even more common than in some other countries - evident when teen suicide rates were released. New Zealand has the highest teen suicide rate, and in  most cases, they're often driven by bullying, either online or in real life. Furthermore, international studies suggest New Zealand has the second highest bullying rate in the world. So this is evidence that bullying is an important thing to recognise in New Zealand because it happens so much.

I felt sad watching the videos about bullying because I can imagine what the bully must be going through, fighting their own battles. But at the same time I feel sad for the people who are being bullied because they may feel terrible. I made a connection with the video because I've been bullied before.

The key messages I took from the video include: words hurt more than you may think. Bullying can happen anywhere, it can even happen to adults in the workplace and not just in schools.

I think that it is important to stop bullying because it can lead to long-term consequences affecting the mental health sector of New Zealand society. Mental health is a huge struggle in New Zealand and it's one that the government is trying to crack down on, especially on teens, where most of the bullying takes place.

WHARE TAPA WHA | HAUORA

I thought I would never have to post about Hauora ever again on this blog, but here we are.

Whare Tapa Wha is about the four dimensions in Hauora - Taha Hinengaro (mental wellbeing), Taha Tinana (physical wellbeing), Taha Wairua (spiritual wellbeing), and Taha Whanau (social wellbeing). These four terms originated from Maori philosophy.
This is useful to understand because if you are able to learn to balance all four of these dimensions, they come together to create a balanced, peaceful lifestyle for you and your family.

One way you could imagine these dimensions as is like a house with four walls. You need these four dimensions in order to keep the house standing otherwise everything falls down. This is why today our task was to build a house using five pieces of paper representing the four dimensions of Whare Tapa Wha. I worked with Ava, Tanaya, and Stacey, and in the end we were able to make our own house.

I think I participated well in the challenge. I contributed by doing some of the construction of the house and writing a definition of one of the dimensions on a wall. The others took part in building and writing too so we contributed evenly.

It was challenging when we were building the house because we didn't figure out how to staple certain places to actually get it to stick. Plus the tape was pretty annoying and it got stuck in weird places. I coped with the challenge by staying calm and having others in my team help me hold it still.

I believe I worked well with others because we were able to get the assigned task done without any fuss and I'm proud of how it turned out.

PROBLEM SOLVING IN BUSINESS

Today in health we have been working towards the completion of some Google slides as we learn about problem solving in businesses.

I learned... different techniques on how to problem solve in business with others (joint problem solving.

The red thoughts are negative thoughts,
the yellow thoughts are challenges,
and the green are positive.

When discussing thought challenges what did you learn about yourself?
When I think, I believe I often react negatively. I learned ways to cope with this - using a question such as 'What is a positive thought I can have?' as a thought challenge to try and think more positively.

During the Business and Enterprise Kete I will be able to face challenges by... using small steps to overcome problems I have with other people (joint problem solving).
Noticing whether my thoughts are red or green and challenging them with a yellow question thought.

When 2 or more of my group members are challenged during the Business and Enterprise Kete we can using the coping steps by...
1. Stating what you both want.
2. Explaining negative consequences for both of them.
3. Negotiating for a win-win situation for both of you.

ASSERTIVENESS IN BUSINESS

Since I've returned to Health at school I have been independently working towards the completion of a task on assertiveness, and how it is important in business, along with learning how to reduce conflict.

I learnt what 'assertive' really means (getting your point across, all while considering the opinion and thoughts of the other person), more on how to reduce conflict in business, and why assertiveness and reducing conflict is important in business

Learning this made me a bit more aware of how I show assertiveness, aggressive, and passiveness. When I am fighting with my parents I am typically aggressive rather than assertive or passive. I can improve these skills by taking time to recognise that other people have opinions and that I need to respect them no matter what they are.

However I can be passive and assertive too - when I am negotiating with my sister on who can get the front seat of the car I ensure that we both get a chance to ride in the front seat. This shows assertiveness. I am also passive throughout the day as I act in a non-hostile manner most, if not all of the time.

During the Business and Enterprise Kete I will be able to reduce conflict by taking a few deep breaths to calm down, go for a walk, rinsing off my face with a splash of cold water, and having peaceful conversations that provide a chance for both people to win (being assertive). For example if me and my group buddy gets in an argument over what colour icing we want, we could settle on both icing colours being used instead of one.

During the Business and Enterprise Kete I will be able to be calm in a number of situations, for example...
- when the business plan goes to pieces and we have to use Plan B
- when the business members get into conflict
- if something changes drastically

I enjoyed learning these skills and I will make sure to try and use these confidently in the Business and Enterprise Kete.

RESILIENCE IN BUSINESS

LO > Define resilience and demonstrate understanding + resilience in business blog.

My favourite photo shared with us about resilience.
For the past two lessons in Health we have been working towards defining and demonstrating our understanding of resilience. I think this was an easy task to do but I still learned a few things.

learnt...
- More about why resilience is essential in situations such as business: it is important because businesses are susceptible to change and if you have the right understanding of how to adapt quickly, it really puts you in the right mindset to continue being successful.

- Developed my understanding of resilience and examples of resilience. Resilience means to have the ability to consistently keep doing your best no matter how difficult a task may be; it also means to have the ability to bounce back and recover quickly from a difficult situation that you struggled with to continue doing your best.

- Started to learn more about some interpersonal skills (resilience) we need to be successful in our business and enterprise topic.

My favourite saying connected to resilience is..
"Bounce back." This is because it reminds me that no matter how hard times get, you can always bounce back and get back on track. This phrase really motivates me cause I can relate to it.

It was difficult to understand information about...
We were showed a video which explained how to be more resilient through some little mouse people trying to find new cheese in a maze. I felt as if I had to read between the lines at some parts to really understand what was going on, but at the end I was confident with what the video had showed me and I was able to try and use it in real life.

It taught me...
Some examples on how to be more resilient in everyday situations, including 'adapt to change quickly,' and 'get ready for change'.

How did you relate to the video Who Moved my Cheese?
I related to it because all humans, including myself, go through tough times and it's easy to avoid finding a solution when things change rather than adapting to it and being resilient.

During the Business and Enterprise Kete I will be able to...
Adapt quickly to change when it happens, make the right decisions on what to do when things change, and overall be more resilient in my business operation, while at the same time be able to enjoy change and monitor it appropriately.
